FAQs

Generally it consists of one central server where clients connect to in a star network topology, also sometimes called a hub-and-spoke setup. The idea being that on the central server you arrange how traffic should flow, and you connect your various devices and networks to it. It does not exclusively have to be used in this way, and it doesn't have to be limited to a single server, but in most simple deployments you'll find a single Access Server where VPN clients connect to, to access resources on the network that the Access Server is on.

With the Access Server product, the best way to deploy them is to have your Access Server installed and working, and with users already set up and working. You give the username and password for the Access Server to a user that needs to connect to the Access Server, and give him the URL of your Access Server. For example your server might be at https://vpn.yourserver.com/ - have the user go there and login with his credentials. The user will then be offered the OpenVPN Connect client software for Windows or mac OS and can download and install that. It will come automatically preconfigured for use and you can simply start the connection from the installed client program.

For Android, iOS, there will be links available to the Play Store and App Store where you can download and install the OpenVPN Connect app from. Then you can use the "Import" function to import a connection profile from a specific URL. Enter the URL of your Access Server and enter the username and password, and you can then use the imported connection profile to start the connection from the installed app.

With Access Server the creation of so-called connection profiles is automated. On Windows and macOS the end-user need merely visit the client web interface of the Access Server once, log in with his or her credentials, and download and install the OpenVPN Connect Client. The connection can then be established from the system tray icon that the OpenVPN Connect Client adds to the computer's system tray. For other systems like Android and iOS devices, the OpenVPN Connect app is available from the Google Play Market and the Apple App Store. Once these are installed, there is an option to add a connection to an Access Server. Provide the address of the server and the credentials, and the connection profile is then installed and ready to be used to establish a connection. For Linux systems a connection profile can be obtained from the Access Server client web interface.

Depends on the choices you make on where to deploy, how many simultaneous connections you need, for how long you want to purchase the software license.
